How To Keep Your Dog Active

Keeping your dog active on a daily basis is crucial for their health and wellbeing. Check out our 7 tips on how to keep your dog active below!

1. Set Up An Obstacle Course
An obstacle course can be a great way for your dog to be challenged both mentally and physically. They can be easy to create and can be done both indoors and outdoors. Use items that are lying around the house such as hula hoops or cushions to create an interesting course for your pooch.

2. Make Your Dog Work For Treats
If your dog loves getting treats, there are a few different ways you can incorporate activity when giving them treats. Create a “hide and seek” game where you hide their favourite treats all around the house such as underneath blankets, on chairs, or behind doors. Getting them to track down their treats with their strong sense of smell will help them get exercise but also keep them stimulated.

3. Play Fetch
Playing fetch with your doggy is a wonderful workout and will help them release some excess energy. There are so many different items that can be used to play fetch such as a stick, a ball, or a frisbee.

4. Go Hiking
It could be beneficial for both you and your doggy to get outdoors and go for a hike. There are plenty of trails inside or outside the city that could add a bit more excitement to your walks. Not only will your dog get the exercise they need but also they get to explore new smells and places.

5. Play In The Yard or Park
Sometimes a quick play in the yard or the park is just enough to get your dog’s heart rate up. Sometimes your pooch may not be feeling up to a walk but try to get them excited by playing a game of chase in your backyard, park, or open space.

6. Take Your Dog For A Swim
Swimming is a good exercise for your pet and is easy on their joints. This will easily wear them out so make sure to keep a close eye on your pup. Not all dogs know how to swim so if you are teaching them be sure to take it one step at a time.

7. Find A Playmate For Your Pup
Another great way to keep your dog active would be to find them another pooch that they can play with. Introducing your dog to other pup’s in the neighbourhood will motivate them to run around and play together.
