10 Active Dog Breeds

Some dogs are just more active than others and it is important as future or current dog owners that we are aware of these high-energy breeds and their needs. We are categorising very active dogs as ones that need more than 2 hours of exercise per day according to the Kennel Club. Take a look at the top 10 breeds below.

Australian Shepherd
These dogs are happiest when they are able to channel their energy into dog sports and activities as they are intelligent and were originally bred as hunting or herding dogs.

Australian Sheppard
Labrador Retriever
Since Labrador Retrievers absolutely love to eat it can be very easy for them to become obese. This means that you should give them plenty of exercise as without it they will not only become overweight but also vent their pent-up energy in destructive ways.

Labrador Retriever
Weimaraner
These dogs need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation as without it they are likely to become nervous and high-strung. Since they have lots of energy to burn and are intelligent they may get into trouble to keep busy.

Border Collie
Border Collies are extremely smart dogs which means that they need constant mental and physical stimulation. As an owner, it is important to create positive ways where they can direct their energy.

Border Collie
Siberian Husky
These athletic and intelligent dogs have lots of energy and due to their independent nature should be constantly stimulated or they could be very challenging for dog owners.

Siberian Husky
German Shepherd
Since German Shepherds are very active and intelligent dogs they must be kept learning and playing throughout the day. Daily exercise like jogging and mental stimulation like training are important so they do not get anxious or bored.

Pointer
Pointers are a very active breed and require lots of vigorous exercise every day. If they do not get enough exercise they can start developing negative behaviours such as chewing and digging.

Belgian Shepherd (Malinois)
If you have a Belgian Malonis or are thinking of getting one make sure you have the time to provide consistent training and the room for it to run around and use up some of their energy, as they will have lots of it.

Malinois
With high-energy dogs, it is important that you give them the exercise they need or they will easily put on weight and develop destructive habits. It is crucial to start young with your dog and get them involved in training, outdoor activities like hiking, and dog sports such as agility.
